How inline coding and marking works
Every coding system follows the same four-step cycle, running inline at production speed.
Trigger
A sensor detects the product as it enters the coding window. The system pulls the correct data for that unit — batch, expiry, serial, GTIN — from the line database or label software.
Mark
The code is printed or marked onto the product or packaging. CIJ for fast-moving substrates, TIJ for high-resolution coding on cartons, laser for permanent marks on durable substrates.
Verify
Inline vision and barcode verifiers read the printed code and grade it against ISO and ANSI standards. The system confirms the data matches what should have been printed.
Log
Every coded unit is logged with timestamp, code data and verification grade. Data feeds into MES, ERP or QMS for traceability, audit and regulatory reporting.
Coding and marking capabilities
We deliver coding and marking across core technology areas. The right method depends on the substrate, the line speed, the durability required and the regulatory framework.
Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) coding
High-speed non-contact coding on fast-moving substrates. Suits beverage, food and pharmaceutical packaging where line speed and reliability are critical. Leibinger CIJ printers as standard.
Thermal Inkjet (TIJ) coding
High-resolution coding on cartons, cases and porous substrates. Better print quality than CIJ for high-density 2D codes (Data Matrix for UDI and serialisation). HSA Systems TIJ as standard.
Laser coding and marking
Permanent marking on plastic, glass, metal and composite substrates. No consumables, no smudging, full compliance with serialisation requirements. Macsa ID lasers as standard.
Barcode and Data Matrix verification
Inline and offline verification to ISO and ANSI standards. ANSI grading on every coded unit, with reject control on non-conforming codes. Omron LVS and Cognex verifiers.
