Thermal Inkjet Printers for Production Line Coding
Thermal inkjet printers (TIJ) deliver reliable, high-quality coding at speed. Built on proven HP inkjet technology, these industrial units print batch codes, dates, barcodes and product information directly onto packaging, labels and products as they move down the line.

How Thermal Inkjet Works
Thermal inkjet uses heat to vapourise a small amount of ink inside each nozzle chamber. The resulting bubble forces a droplet through the nozzle and onto the substrate. The process repeats thousands of times per second, building up characters, codes and graphics line by line.
Because the printhead only fires when needed, there’s no recirculation system and no drying of open nozzles between shifts. Cartridges seal when removed, so ink doesn’t cure or clog. When print quality drops, you replace the cartridge—printhead included—and you’re running again in under a minute.
This makes TIJ printers well-suited to environments where different products, batch codes or languages rotate frequently. Changeover is a matter of selecting a new message on the controller; no purging, no cleaning cycles, no wasted ink.
When to Choose Thermal Inkjet Over Continuous Inkjet
Thermal inkjet suits production lines where:
Print height is modest. Most TIJ printheads top out at ½” or 1″, though multi-head configurations extend that range.
Substrates are porous or semi-porous. Cardboard, uncoated paper, wood, and some treated plastics take the water-based or solvent-based inks readily.
Simplicity matters. Fewer consumables, no make-up fluid, sealed cartridges, minimal cleaning.
Line speed is moderate. TIJ handles speeds up to around 200 metres per minute, depending on message complexity and substrate.
Where you need taller prints, fast-drying on non-porous surfaces (glass, metal, glossy film), or extreme line speeds, continuous inkjet or laser remain better fits. But for carton coding, case marking, and secondary packaging, thermal inkjet often delivers the best balance of cost, quality and ease of operation.
