Labelling software covers two related but distinct functions in production:
- Label design and print software runs on operator desktops or production PCs – users design label templates, pull variable data from databases or ERP systems, and print to thermal, inkjet, laser or direct marking devices.
- Label management systems run as central platforms – one source of truth for label artwork across all sites, with version control, approval workflows, browser-based printing, and full audit trail of every change and print event.
- In larger and regulated operations the two work together – artwork is designed and managed centrally, and printed locally from any site against the approved master.
- Variable data fields (lot, batch, serial, expiry, GTIN) populate from SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards, MFG Pro, MES or local databases at print time.
- Multi-language and multi-locale templates handle export market labelling without duplicating master artwork.
- 21 CFR Part 11 compliant audit trails, electronic signatures and approval workflows for FDA, GMP and ISO 13485 regulated environments.
