Choosing the Right Handheld Scanner
Laser scanners read 1D barcodes only and remain cost-effective for simple retail and warehouse use. Linear imagers also handle 1D codes but with no moving parts, making them more durable. Area imagers (2D imagers) read both 1D and 2D codes including QR and Data Matrix – the most flexible choice for mixed-format environments.
Corded scanners are the right fit for fixed POS and packing stations; cordless Bluetooth models give operators freedom of movement on the warehouse floor and at goods-in. Most current Cognex, Datalogic and Zebra ranges support both options.
